Summary:   The Buyer position is responsible for developing and managing supplier relationships in a manner that will ensure that high quality material, equipment and services are available and aligned with the requirements of the company.  This position will lead supplier selection efforts and negotiate supplier contracts in a manner consistent with the objectives of the company and within established company guidelines and parameters.  This position will have responsibility for managing operations programs aimed at achieving cost reduction goals and for participating in programs aimed at improving supplier quality and delivery performance.  This position will also be accountable for resolving systemic supplier quality and delivery problems.

 

The Buyer is responsible for planning, purchasing, and monitoring supplier performance for assigned products. This position is responsible for managing inventory to meet our customer service objectives with the least amount of inventory and least possible costs. This position will have replenishment responsibility for selected suppliers and materials, and will determine safety stock and inventory levels for selected suppliers.  This position is further responsible for the timely planning and scheduling of the receipt and inventory control of the products and services as assigned consistent with ERP software requirements.

 

The Buyer will work in close coordination with design and manufacturing engineering, accounting, production control, and customer service.  This position will handle the day-to-day activities involved in planning and executing within the ERP manufacturing planning system. Successful planning will create the proper inventory investment to achieve the company’s cash-flow expectations.

 

The Buyer will be responsible for strategic-to-tactical projects, assignments and other duties as assigned.  This position will help identify best practices across sites, develop and implement business process improvements, train and improve utilization of ERP tools, and support operations with analytics and analysis.  This role will be called upon to directly support improvement initiatives including cost savings projects.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Initiates purchase orders and revisions for parts, services and/or special tools; arranges for submission and inspection of sample products as required; maintains close coordination with design and plant engineering to ensure timely execution of product and services sourcing activities.
  • Secures and analyzes quotations, negotiates prices and terms with suppliers, and recommends suppliers with respect to cost, quality and delivery competitiveness for assigned responsibilities.
  • Studies market prices and trends, engineering developments, and manufacturing method improvements applicable to assigned responsibilities; advises company activities with concurrence of the Purchasing Manager.
  • Interviews and confers with current and prospective suppliers to determine supply capabilities, transportation logistics, inventory control, and management; negotiates prices and delivery terms with guidance from the Purchasing Manager for assigned responsibilities. Actively search for secondary or multiple sources.
  • Coordinates as appropriate quality matters and engineering changes/developments between company activities and suppliers.
  • Visits suppliers’ facilities to qualify them as new sources and assists in the resolution of production, design, quality and/or delivery problems.
  • Build a partnership with our suppliers to better service our business.
  • Participate in projects and continuous improvement processes.
  • Effective use of Stellar’s planning and scheduling tools in the development of sound purchasing schedules and the release of purchase orders in support of customer service, inventory and cost targets.
  • Proactive communication of requirements, supplier performance and/or service issues (potential or actual) to all effected departments.
  • Actively monitor and deplete slow moving inventory.
  • Coordinates with IT to identify new or modified systems, equipment and software to support the optimization of ERP and business processes.
  • Develops and maintains inventory plans in anticipation of customer needs aligned to company goals and commitments.
  • Adjust plan to respond to demand changes as needed, to avoid stock outages and overages in all locations; evaluate and communicate stock issues
  • Request and monitor all requested supplier certification documents and support Engineering and QA in the completion of supplier approvals.
  • Monitors and ensures compliance with fiscal policies, guidelines, internal fiscal controls and applicable Federal and State regulations, codes, rules, ordinances and/or statutes as they apply to this position.
  • Complete special projects, assignments and other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities    

This position has no supervisory responsibilities.

 

Work Environment:

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This position also operates in our manufacturing facilities and is required to follow our safety policies.

Education AND Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Supply Chain or related field.
  • 5+ years in a Supply Chain Management field preferred.
  • APICS certification preferred.
  • Six Sigma (Green Belt or Black Belt) preferred.

Additional Requirements:

  • Company sponsored continuing education may be required.
  • Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-the-area and overnight travel may be expected.
